Scottish stonemasons are considered the best to have practiced the trade in pioneer Ontario.Their work dominates many town such as Fergus and Elora and can be seen in houses and barns all over the southern part of the province. Their style is most often characterized by its square shaped stone and regular, even courses. They worked with both split granite fieldstone and quarried limestone. The Ontario Stone Farmhouse is an example of Scottish Style Masonry.
The Ontario Stone Farmhouse is characterized by its regular shaped stone on the front of the house, while the other sides are usually have more random but still regular coursing. They are usually constructed of split fieldstone. Sometimes the corners are made from quarried limestone.
