On this day, seven years ago a tragedy occurred that changed the fashion world forever. On April 24, 2013, the Rana Plaza garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, collapsed, trapping workers inside and killing 1,134 people. They were mostly women; poor seamstresses in the fast fashion industry, whose lives appeared to be as disposable as the low cost garments they created.
Since this day, there have been many changes to the way we view where and how our clothes are made. Fashion Revolution Week emerged out of this tragedy as a way to shed light on the lives of workers in the garment industry. To celebrate brands that are treating their employees fairly, and to discuss ways to make the industry more transparent.
